10 Bad Work Habits to Avoid at Work

Start the new year off on the right foot and leave your bad work habits behind. Make 2021 your best year yet and focus on making your work-life happy and anxiety-free. Leave behind these 10 bad work habits to kick off the new year!

  1. Skipping Breaks and Meals

Making time to eat and rest is important. Set a consistent sleep schedule to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day and prioritizing getting a full night’s rest. Don’t skip meals or you will end up becoming sluggish and have trouble focusing on the task at hand. Make sure you plan time to eat and prepare meals. This way you will attack each task with a fresh perspective and end up working more efficiently.

  1. Telling Yourself You’ll Do It Tomorrow

Don’t procrastinate. It’s easy to put off less desirable tasks until the next day, but by doing so you are just prolonging the task. Try prioritizing the less desirable tasks at the beginning of your day to get them out of the way. Once the tasks are no longer looming above you, you will be able to focus on the work you enjoy.

  1. Working When You’re Sick

If this year has taught us anything, it’s that your health (mental or physical) is a priority. If you feel sick or mentally exhausted, take a sick day! It’s not worth it for you to overexert yourself and end up feeling worse than you did before. By taking a day of rest, you will be able to attack the next day with a new outlook and feel refreshed.

  1. Hating Your Workspace

You spend over 40 hours a week at your desk, so why make it a space you dislike. Whether at home or in an office, decorate your workspace with personalized pictures, plants, and other little decorations. Make it an aesthetically pleasing place, that you enjoy spending time in.

  1. Being too Lazy to Learn Something New

Don’t fall into a rut by getting complacent at work. There is always something new to learn that can end up furthering your career. Instead of coasting through your career, make it a point to challenge yourself along the way. Whether it is attending a workshop, taking a new class, or reading up on the latest trends, there is always something new to learn.

  1. Dreading Mondays

Don’t let the Sunday scaries get to you by dreading Monday and the upcoming workweek. Instead of thinking about all the work you have to do that week, think of something fun instead. Change up the narrative by giving yourself something to look forward to -like, treating yourself to lunch.

  1. Not Being Part of the Team

Even if it’s “not part of your job”, having a helpful attitude and a willingness to learn about other parts of the company can go a long way. By shutting yourself off to anything that doesn’t pertain to your specific role, it can harm your progress in the workplace. Show your company that you are eager to take on new responsibilities and help out your colleagues when needed.

  1. Being Unprepared

Winging it might have gotten you this far, but upper management will eventually start seeing through your facade. Turning up unprepared to meetings and winging it, will hurt your performance at work. Start setting aside time before the meeting and or huddle to prepare. Your effort will start to pay off and help get you noticed.

  1. Poor E-Mail Communication

Procrastinating on emails can be anything, from not responding, to not being aware of how you come across via email. Depending on your response, you could be perceived as rude or too longwinded or wordy. If you have a habit of taking a long time to respond to e-mails or forget to respond, you could cause delays or confusion, miss important deadlines or meetings, and come off as unprofessional. Instead set some time to go through all your emails each morning, flag important emails, and prioritize them by most important to least important.

  1. Sticking it Out in the Wrong Job

If you’re going to spend most of your time at work, make sure that your job is fulfilling. If you dislike your job, your attitude and enthusiasm will lack and can reflect poorly on your work. When something no longer feels right, it’s time for a change. Your happiness is important so make sure your work is contributing to your happiness to taking away from it.
