Have unused PTO? How to Spend Your Time Off in 2020

Between travel restrictions, office closures, and canceled events due to COVID-19 many people have forgone their vacations this year. With so much time spent at home, every day has started to feel the same. If you have unused PTO to take over the holidays, consider treating yourself to a mini vacation or two. Here are some fun ways to spend your time-off during these unprecedented times.

Taking a day or two off does not mean you need to go somewhere to be on vacation. A staycation can be just as fun and relaxing as visiting someplace new. Before taking your day off, make a list of all the movies you’ve always wanted to watch, books you’ve always wanted to read, and or musical artists you’ve always wanted to listen to. Choose a few to watch or listen to on your day off.

  • If you’re into cooking or baking, maybe take this day to try a new recipe. You will have the entire day to experiment and can even try to make a competition out of it with roommates, family, or a significant other.
  • If the past few weeks at work have been stressful, maybe consider having a spa day. Whether you are physically going to a spa (safely) or making a DIY spa day at home, either can be relaxing. Throw on a facemask, pour yourself a glass of wine, and put on your favorite movie. Ensure to put your phone on do not disturb to distance yourself from work for the day.
  • If you have kids at home, have a family game day where each family member gets to choose a board game, video game, or sport. This way you can get your whole family involved on your day off.
  • If you would rather travel to another destination, consider taking a road trip or renting an Airbnb in an area where the main attractions are outdoors. If you live in a warmer climate, consider taking a day trip to the beach or spend the day doing outdoor activities.

Regardless of how you choose to spend your days off, make sure that they are exactly what you want to do. The most important part is that you are having fun and forgetting about everything going on, even if it is just for the day. It’s been a difficult year and you deserve a break!
