How to Have a Successful Virtual Interview

Interviews are often stressful, and a virtual interview may include factors that an in-person interview does not. Follow these six steps to nail your virtual interview, impress your employer and get your dream job.

Double Check Your Technology

Take the time to check your internet connectivity and confirm that your camera and microphone are working. Make sure your camera is clear and does not lag, and that the microphone does not echo. Just like with any normal interview, make sure you are online and ready 10 minutes before. This will help you calm your nerves and go over what you want to say one last time.

Set the Scene and Minimize Distractions

Find a spot in your apartment or house that has optimal lighting, preferably a room with a window and a blank wall behind you. Make sure your picture is not washed out or too dark. Clean up your surroundings as you do not want your potential employers to think that you are unorganized. Eliminate all distractions, silence your cell phone, turn off the TV and close any windows in order to eliminate outdoor surroundings.

Monitor Your Body Language

Body language is an important part of making a good impression during an interview. Since you can’t physically shake the hiring manager’s hand or exude enthusiasm there are other ways to show your interest and personality. Sit up straight and remember to SMILE. Even through the camera, your employer will be able to see your excitement and passion. Keep the camera at eye level because eye contact is still important, even if it is virtual. Lastly, try not to fidget as that can be distracting during the interview.

Dress to Impress

You may be sitting in the comfort of your own home, but that does not mean you can wear your loungewear during an interview. Dress the way you would for an in-person interview. Based on the position you are applying for; professional clothing is often recommended. This will show that you are committed to the position and will even increase your confidence. Dressing the part will make you feel like the part.

Be Yourself

Always be yourself. Due to the physical disconnect, a virtual interview creates, make sure to answer each question with enthusiasm and a smile. Try and give off good vibes even if it is through a screen. Most hiring managers can tell if you’re the right fit for the company right off the bat.

Don’t Forget to Follow Up

Lastly, follow up. Always remember to send a thank-you email within 24 hours of the interview. Sending a thank-you email will show the potential employer that you valued their time and give you the chance to resell yourself. Make sure to reiterate your unique strengths, especially those that would benefit the employer. If there was anything specific you and the employer bonded over, make sure to mention it. Keep the email short, concise and to the point, your goal is to leave a positive lasting impression.
