Do you know the difference between business casual and professional dress? Dress codes are sometimes confusing for employees, but that can be compounded when you’re preparing for your property management interview. How do you know what to wear to impress the interviewer and get the job? What if you make a mistake and you’re judged on your appearance? Here are some common dress code choices for your interview and some tips to help you make the right decision.

Professional

Professional dress generally refers to suits. This is a great choice for an interview at any level because it shows that you’re taking it seriously.

  • For Men: Wear a tailored suit in a dark color, such as black, charcoal, or blue. Always have a wrinkle-free, buttoned up shirt with an appropriate tie. Wear professional shoes, not loafers.
  • For Women: You can also wear a suit, whether it’s with pants or a skirt. You might have a few more choices in terms of acceptable colors, but keep it neutral. Also, keep accessories to a minimum.

Business Casual

Some employers suggest that you come to the interview in business casual attire. You need to respect what they say because sometimes it’s a test to make sure you follow directions.

  • For Men: Choose a button-down shirt or polo to pair with dark slacks or khakis. Wear a matching belt and shoes in either brown or black.
  • For Women: Business casual can feel like a complicated trap for women because there are so many possible choices. A skirt or slacks with a blouse is a common option.

Casual

Rarely will you need to dress casually for an interview, but some companies considered young and hip may ask you to follow this guideline.

  • For Men: Jeans, sweaters, polo shirts, or even plain tee shirts can all be casual. Shorts are almost never appropriate, and neither are sandals or flip flops.
  • For Women: Women should follow the same suggestions for a casual workplace. Short skirts and revealing tops are not appropriate even for a casual environment.

Whatever you are requested to wear, make sure you’re neat and clean and you’ll make a great first impression.
