Leaving the workforce isn’t the end of your career. There are many reasons that a person can leave and then choose to go back to work at a later time in their lives when circumstances are different. But there may be some things you can do to give yourself a better chance of landing a position after a long absence from the workforce. If you’re just starting up a job search after being out of the market, here are some things you should do.
-
Talk to a Recruiter:
Recruiters can be the biggest ally in your job search. They’re trained to match resumes with jobs, and they can talk to you about your qualifications to see where the best match might be. They are a great resource for resume and interview tips that can help you put your best foot forward.
-
Update Your Resume:
Don’t use the same resume you did the last time you looked for a job. Information and preferences have changed since then. Instead, update your resume to reflect your current skills, what you were doing while away from the workplace, and use a readable format. There are a lot of online resources for resume writing that will work for you.
-
Create an Interview Strategy:
Can you walk into an interview, be yourself, and answer the questions to land your next job? That’s the basic idea, but there’s more to it. If you haven’t interviewed in a while, put together an interview strategy to help you remember your accomplishments, important points, and prepare questions for the interviewer.
-
Gather References:
Your boss from 10 years ago may not be your best resource, so who do you contact. Even if you’ve been out of the workforce, you’ve made a positive contribution to others. For example, maybe you volunteered. The organizer may be a great reference for you. Maybe you did some work on the side for a friend, they can also be a reference. Gather this information to provide when asked.
