Showing who you truly are during a job search is important. Hiring managers want to know not only that you have the skills and experience required for a role, but also that you will fit with company culture. Your personality also affects how you plan, implement and manage your job search to find the role you desire.

Before a Job Interview

When networking and contacting hiring managers, create your plan based on your personality. For example, if you are an extrovert, you may prefer to meet new people and engage in conversations by participating in career fairs and networking events. Ensure you have your elevator pitch ready to describe the opportunities you are looking for. If you are an introvert, you may want to cultivate a list of recruiters, hiring managers and industry professionals to contact. Use email and social media to initiate contact, then follow up with a phone call. Set up a time to discuss your career options and determine whether you may be a good fit for the company. Remain open to different opportunities that match your skill set and experience level so you have more options. Think about which core responsibilities interest you, and look for them in job descriptions. Set up a plan for your job search. Keep track of applications submitted, deadlines, networking events and other applicable topics.

During a Job Interview

Being your true self during a job interview shows whether you will fit with company culture. Therefore, the more personable you are and connect with the interviewer, the greater your odds of being offered a position. Arrive prepared and relaxed.
