Employers in the United States and Canada create Business Pages to post job openings both on a Jobs tab on their Page and in the News Feed of relevant Facebook users. Jobs are searchable within a two- to 100-mile radius of any location and are sorted by categories such as part-time, full-time, contract, internship or volunteer opportunity. Users see the job openings and hit “Apply Now” to send an application through Facebook Messenger. Facebook fills in the applicant’s profile information and picture to expediate the process. The applicant is then asked to create a short cover letter describing why their skills and experience make them the best candidate. Users can also share the job openings and tag individuals who may be interested in applying.

How LinkedIn Differs from Facebook Jobs 

Whereas LinkedIn focuses on highly skilled workers looking for roles, Facebook Jobs focuses on lower-skilled workers not actively looking for roles. Because Facebook discovered that small and midsize businesses were having difficulty hiring and passive candidates were open to looking at higher-paying jobs, the social networking company decided to find a way to connect the businesses with qualified candidates. Since LinkedIn focuses on full-time and salaried employees, Facebook Jobs focuses on part-time and hourly wage employees. Because a substantial number of these employees are on Facebook each day, they can more easily apply for jobs that interest them.

How to Create a Professional Facebook Profile

Employers are looking for how you present yourself. For example, employers want to know how you communicate, how creative you are, how involved you are in your community and whether you’d be a good fit with company culture. You need to portray an image that employers find attractive. Remove anything that shows lack of self-discipline, such as jokes about how you should be working but can’t stay off social media. Take down posts and photos of a controversial nature, such as barely clothed individuals, consumption of alcohol or illegal drugs or statements that are racist, sexist or discriminatory. In addition, eliminate displays of your religious beliefs, sexuality or strong political views. Employers may use this publicly posted information to decide not to hire you. Ensure your spelling, grammar and punctuation are accurate. Employers want candidates who check their work and pay attention to detail.
