Interview of NPM Team Member Caroline Nicol

caroline-nichol-npm-staffingCaroline Nicol, Director of Operations for NPM Staffing, got her start in property management in 2005. After the baby clothing startup, she worked for was sold, she decided to look for a new career. A friend of her father’s, Kevin Forsyth, worked in property management and suggested Caroline become a leasing consultant for Equity Residential. She was fortunate enough to work for the branch in San Diego, CA, where she was born and raised. Approximately a year and a half later, Caroline became an assistant manager for a different property owned by the company. Approximately six to eight months after that, she was promoted to property manager. Among her other responsibilities, Caroline trained leasing consultants and filled in for a property manager when the manager was on maternity leave.

In 2008, Caroline was approached by APT Staffing to take over an administrative role for their San Diego branch. She remained in the position until her daughter was born in November 2009. Caroline later moved up to Director of Operations. She managed payroll, compliance and temporary workers in company branches along the West Coast and assisted with place of employment issues.

In July 2014, APT Staffing was acquired and NPM Staffing and became a new brand. Today, Caroline is responsible for running the NPM brand in the West Coast territory of California and Arizona. She oversees temporary workers in all company branches, coordinates compliance with new apartment communities and management companies, and approves authorizations for the brand. She also travels to branches to check on the company’s portfolios, remains updated on financial data, and ensures the company is reaching its goals.

Caroline says the best part of working in property management is the people. Through NPM Staffing, she enjoys the satisfaction of helping job candidates receive the training they need to secure a job, become successful and grow along with the company. Although encouraging workers to take temporary jobs can be challenging, Caroline is able to assist workers who’ve faced difficulty getting a job on their own and watch them progress in their career paths. She points out that the sky’s the limit when it comes to working in property management.

Caroline shared that actively being involved with professional associations for property management and serving on multiple committees has helped her career growth. By participating in opportunities that come her way, she continues adding to her skill set, building relationships in the industry and staying updated on news and events.
