If you work in retail and are looking for a career change, you may be interested in property management. Many of the skills required for retail work are similar to those required for property management. Therefore, if you’re looking to transition from retail, you may want to consider a career in property management.

You Work in a Public Setting

You can utilize your sales and customer service skills to find out people’s needs and fulfill them. You may be responsible for conducting tours of available units and the property for potential residents, answering questions and negotiating leases. You may also respond to maintenance issues, collect and process rent payments and maintain open communication with residents, staff, managers and the property owner. Because you work with the public, your schedule will change weekly and include working nights, weekends and holidays. You’ll also be on your feet a lot.

You Help People Find Their Future Home

Working in property management lets you help individuals find their new home. As a leasing consultant, you market the property so interested individuals approach you to learn more about leasing a unit. You find out what the individual’s needs are, show available units, point out amenities and benefits of living on the property, answer questions, overcome objections, and either negotiate a lease or confirm a time to follow up. You also facilitate the purchase of security, stability and peace of mind when providing residents with the homes they desire.

You Control Your Career Path

The property management industry values your skills as well as your experience.  You can get your foot in the door with a high school diploma and work your way up. There are many associations, trade shows, and training programs to help you hone your skills. In addition, you may earn certification in areas related to your career choice, such as National Apartment Leasing Professional (NALP) or Certified Apartment Maintenance Technician (CAMT). Depending on your career path, your future titles may include Senior Property Manager, Regional Property Manager, Leasing Manager, or Director of Property Management.
