If you’re seeking a property management position, you may be asked to participate in a video interview. If so, you’ll need to prepare as you would for any interview with a few additions. Follow these tips for a great video interview in your property management job search.
Ensure Your Technology Works
Download the required application or plugin for the video chat system your interviewer uses. Utilize headphones while talking to avoid echoes, blips, delays or other disruptions. Test your internet connection to ensure it’s fast and solid. Check that your sound inputs and outputs are set correctly. Ensure your laptop or tablet is plugged in so your battery remains powered. Prop up your device so you see the camera at eye level. Ensure your video camera works and you appear professional. Conduct at least one mock interview to verify that everything is in order and you have time for corrections.
Choose a Quiet Location
If you’re at home and other people are present, conduct your interview in an office, bedroom, or other area where you can close the door. Make sure everyone understands you’re not to be interrupted. If you’re in an office, close the door and post a note asking others to not disturb you. Reducing potential distractions will help the interviewer and you focus on what’s being said and more clearly understand each other.
Dress Appropriately
You’ll maintain a professional mindset and behave accordingly. Dress professionally from head to toe, including polished dress shoes and minimal accessories. Try wearing bright colors, which show up well on the screen. Avoid wearing white, which can give you a washed-out look, or patterns, which can look fuzzy and distracting. If you need help determining the proper dress code, call the company and ask what’s appropriate. Your interviewer’s first impression of you is crucial, so market yourself accordingly.
Be Prepared
Research the position, department and company. Find out from the job description what your responsibilities would be. Read about recent company news. Also, think about three reasons you’re the ideal candidate for the role. Discuss examples that illustrate your strong work ethic, ability to blend with company culture, or how you produce desired results. In addition, show how your skills and experience make you the best candidate. Quantify specific examples of what accomplishments you achieved and how they benefitted a previous employer. Furthermore, ensure you have at least four questions for the interviewer. You may ask what a typical workday might be like, how the company measures success or what soft skills are necessary for excelling in the position.
