Your Social Media Profiles May be Affecting Your Job Search

Social media can be a very useful tool in today’s job market, but what you decide to post could negatively impact landing your next job. Your social footprint is a public one and even if your accounts are set to private employers may have other ways to access your profile.

Think of your social media, your Instagram, Facebook, Twitter etc. as windows into your life. These platforms allow your potential employers to see past your resume and cover letter and directly into your life. Because of this, it is important to have your digital footprint to highlight your life in a way that makes you desirable to potential employers.

Here is a checklist you can use to optimize your social media accounts to appeal to hiring managers:

  • Review your photos for behavior that may be viewed as unprofessional
  • Avoid language that could be inappropriate or offensive
  • Eliminate any negativity about your previous employers
  • Update your screen name or handle if it is unprofessional
  • Set your profile to private if you want to limit what can be accessed by non-connections

Try treating your social media like your home. You want everyone coming over to see it in the best light possible. Keep it clean and neat but still allow people to catch a glimpse of who you really are and what your life is like. Use your best judgment when posting as you never know who may see it.

Once your social media accounts are cleaned up you can let recruiters/future employers know that you are actively seeking a job. LinkedIn and Facebook are great platforms for this. By joining or following certain companies and groups it will show others that you are interested in them. Adding certain hashtags and sharing and liking other’s posts will cause your social media outreach to grow. More people including recruiters will start to notice you and will often reach out to you for employment opportunities. It is important to stay active on social media but make sure you are not oversharing your life. You do not need to be posting every day but sharing someone’s post or retweeting an interesting tweet will still show you are active.
