4 Important Questions to Ask During an Interview

At the end of an interview, potential employers usually leave time for questions. These questions can further determine whether you want to work for the company and if their ideals align with yours.

Keep in mind that most interviews are often a lengthy process and tend to consist of 2-3 interviews. Try not to get ahead of yourself in the first interview and start asking about advancement opportunities right away. This type of question is more appropriate for the last round interview when you are nearing the option of weighing the job offer.

Here are 4 of the most important questions to ask in a first-round interview:

  1. What about my resume caught your attention?

This question should be asked at the beginning of an interview. It allows your potential employer to give you positive feedback and remind them of why they called you in the first place. Secondly, the employer will tell you what made you stand out. This will allow you to play up what attracted the employer throughout the interview.

  1. What is the department structure like?

Asking this question will give you insight into how your role will collaborate with co-workers and other departments within the company. It also gives you an idea of how much your role can grow and how much upward mobility you will have. This question shows the potential employer that you are interested in working with others and can see the bigger picture.

  1. What does success look like in this position?

Asking this question will give you more insight on the position and how to succeed within the given role. It tells you how goal-oriented or numbers-driven the department is and how much pressure you will face trying to meet tangible targets. This question will allow you to see how your personal working style is compatible with that of the departments.

  1. What is your company culture like and how does it reflect your mission statement?

Doing your research about the company before an interview is important, so try to find their mission statement or list of values. If you are unable to find them, ask your potential employer about their corporate values and proceed to ask how they tie into the company’s culture. This will give you an idea of whether the company practices what they preach and if they prioritize company culture.

By asking these 4 questions, you will gain insight into both the company and the position/department for which you are applying for. Asking questions during an interview will show the employer that you care about the position and did some research prior to the interview.
