5 Ways to Help Stay on Schedule at Work

There are so many distractions in today’s digitally connected world. You have your phone to access the internet 24/7, and many of us can’t be without one. But technology can be a disorganizing force in your average workday. What can you do to make sure you minimize your distractions and focus on the work at hand? Here are some helpful tips so you can get things done.

Manage Your Time

The most common way we see people mismanage time is through email and internet use. As soon as a new email pops up, you have to stop what you’re doing to check it. But is that true? An email can wait a few minutes. One trick is to give yourself blocks of time to work without checking email. Then spend half an hour focused only on reading and returning messages.

Don’t Multitask

Contrary to popular belief, the human brain is not designed to multitask. You’re not actually able to concentrate on more than one task at a time. So, stop trying to force yourself to do it. Instead, prioritize and focus on the work at hand before trying to switch to something else.

Unplug

Are you still connected to the internet when you get home after a long day of work? Do you sometimes respond to work-related emails and texts during this time? There is a lot of evidence to suggest this is unhealthy and can negatively impact your ability to have work/life balance. Give yourself time away from technology when you can.

Use a Day Planner

Technology can help you stay organized, but it isn’t the only way. Using a traditional desk calendar, day planner; or bullet journal can give you a tactile experience that will help you be more accomplished every day. Write down your to-do list and cross tasks off when they’re completed.

Organize Your Desk

A disorganized workspace will also distract you. When you can’t find the things you need, you’ll spend more time looking and less time working. Create an organizational system that will work for you.
