Preparing for a job interview can be challenging. You may be getting frustrated by not securing interviews as quickly as you thought you would. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to create more positive outcomes. Here are three ways to mentally prepare for your next job interview.

Determine Your Motivation

You may be unemployed, wanting a new challenge or desiring a career change. Whatever your reason for seeking a new position, be honest and positive about it. Even if you don’t get along with your current boss or you have to work long hours, put a positive spin on the situation so an interviewer doesn’t perceive you to be the problem. You may discuss looking for a new direction in your career or wanting to learn about a different industry. Also, focus on what type of future you want to create and what opportunities you see working for the company you’re interviewing with. Determine which of your transferrable skills will help you succeed in your next position and how you can provide value to the company.

Change Your Focus

Although you may be casting a wide net in hopes of securing more interviews, a narrower search most likely generate more results. Avoid looking at positions you lack the skills or experience for. Although you may work in marketing, don’t apply for roles involving communication, sales or other positions that are marketing-related. Instead, decide on the specific role you want and are qualified for and search accordingly. Decide what you want to achieve in your career and what your key skills and motivations are. Providing honest answers will help you move closer to being called in for interviews. In addition, analyze your past roles to determine what you enjoyed doing, what you achieved and why you excelled in those areas. Use that information to help guide your job search.

Request Help

Cultivate relationships with members of your network who work in the industry you want and/or have a position similar to the one you desire. The more personal your connections, the more likely the individuals are to help you. Also, be specific when asking your network for help. You may explain exactly what type of role you seek or ask if the person can introduce you to a specific employer. Ensure you benefit your network in appropriate ways as they help you get what you want. This may include introducing an individual to someone who can further their career or using your skills and expertise to help the person. Be sure to, thank each individual for their time and offer to help them in the future.
