Your first day of your property management career may be stressful. There are numerous co-workers to meet and a lot of information to learn that you may feel overwhelmed. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to more seamlessly blend with the organization right from the start. Follow these guidelines to feel more comfortable on your first day in property management.

Dress Professionally

Determine the dress code in advance so you show up looking professional. Your goal is to blend in while being comfortable. You want to show you’re serious about your work while appearing approachable. Think back to your interviews and how employees were dressed. If you are unsure, ask your manager what the appropriate dress code is for this property management job. They want you to represent the organization in the right manner.

Arrive Early

Show up 15 minutes early. Practice your commute several times beforehand, allowing time for traffic. Upon arrival at the office, set up your work space. You may want to place some framed photos on your desk and/or pictures on the wall, but keep it to a minimum. Place other personal items such as HR paperwork in a file or desk drawer you can lock for safekeeping.

Meet Co-Workers

Introduce yourself to co-workers so you facilitate a smooth transition to the team. Make eye contact, smile and shake hands as you learn each other’s names. Make small talk about family, hobbies and other personal interests. Also, study how your co-workers present themselves, collaborate and interact with others to determine proper office etiquette. The culture of the office takes time to understand and appreciate. Do your best to be yourself and determine your new role with your co-workers.

Ask Questions

Ask in-depth questions about the company during orientation. Also, ask your supervisor practical and general questions to determine ways you can be most successful in your role. If you don’t understand an explanation of completing a task, ask to review it. Take notes on everything you learn so you can refer as needed. Managers will appreciate your questions in the beginning instead of having you redo tasks in the future because you didn’t understand them fully.

Monitor Your Body Language

Make sure your shoulders are loose and breathe naturally. Also, if you begin to feel anxious and your muscles tense, make a conscious choice to loosen up. In addition, take breaks at the appropriate times so you come back refreshed and ready to continue learning.
